Tom McCaslin: About




Tom McCaslin is currently Assistant Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina where he maintains a large studio of Tuba and Euphonium students at the Undergraduate and Graduate levels.

Raised in Regina Saskatchewan, Canada, Tom began his musical training on the trombone at the age of nine and switched to the tuba three years later. Tom's first tuba teacher was Tuba Virtuoso John Griffiths. He went onto receive a Licentiate in Music Performance from McGill University (Montreal) and a Master’s degree in Music Performance from Arizona State University. Tom’s principal teachers include John Griffiths, Fritz Kaenzig, Roger Bobo, Dennis Miller, Floyd Cooley and Samuel Pilafian. In 2003, Tom became the first tuba player to return three summers to the prestigious Tanglewood Music Center, the summer training center for the Boston Symphony.

In 2006, Tom was Acting Principal Tuba in the Auckland Philharmonia (New Zealand). In addition he has performed as substitute and additional tuba with the Minnesota Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Charleston Symphony, the Winnipeg Symphony, the Ann Arbor Symphony, the New Mexico Symphony, the Santa Fe Symphony, and the Regina Symphony Orchestra. Tom was previously on faculty at Bemidji State University and the University of Auckland (New Zealand).

Tom serves as Historian for the International Tuba and Euphonium Association. He has published articles for the association's journal including recent cover stories featuring an interview with Roger Bobo and a tribute to the late John Griffiths.

As a soloist, Tom has presented recitals in the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland and Australia. He has also recorded for the Canadian Broadcast Company (CBC), National Public Radio (NPR) and performed on Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor. In 2008, he was a featured artist at the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference held in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Soon to be released by Crystal Records is his first Solo CD: "Inside Out". It contains new works for solo tuba by an international mix of composers such as: Frank Zappa, Jorge Salgueiro, Elizabeth Raum, Juraj Filas, Francois Thullier, and Sam Pilafian. It was recorded by Clarke Rigsby and produced by Sam Pilafian. Check back for more details soon!


Tom is a Yamaha Performing Artist and performs on a Custom 822 F tuba, an 826 CC Artist Model tuba and a 621 CC Tuba.
